NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS
Black Poppy seeds are an oilseed obtained from dried seed pods of the poppy flower. These tiny, kidney-shaped seeds have been harvested by various civilizations for thousands of years for both culinary and sedative uses. To some extent, harvesting for poppy seeds is in conflict with harvesting for opium. Poppy seeds of superior quality are harvested from ripe seed pods whereas opium is harvested while the seed pods are still green and their latex abundant.
Qualities: Poppy seeds are composed of 6% water, 28% carbohydrates, 42% fat, and 21% protein and are rich source of thiamine, folate, and several essential minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc.
Common uses: The seeds are used, whole. ground, as an ingredient in many foods all over the world- especially in pastry and breads, or pressed to yield poppy seed oil.
Storage: Store in cool, dark, dry place
These specific nutrients can produce healthy skin and red blood cells. Zinc specifically can protect your immune system and fight off bacteria that can hurt the body. Since poppy seeds are high in fiber, this aids in digestion and ensures you’ll stay full for hours without needing to grab unhealthy snacks in between meals. These are the very BEST poppy seeds for baking your bread, bagels, muffins, fillings, and puddings.
